Is Keith Olbermann the next Edward R. Murrow?
The absurdity of this question begs another question.

Is Al Sharpton the next Martin Luther King?
Just because Olbermann ends his nightly broadcast with the Murrow signature signoff "Goodnight and goodluck" doesn't a Murrow wannabe make for the Hastings-on-Hudson graduate. Really, look it up.
Consider this quote from NPR's Edward R. Murrow: Broadcasting History
"Edward R. Murrow brought rooftop reports of the Blitz of London into America's living rooms before this country entered World War II."

I assume we all know this piece is tongue in cheek, but for the sake of those too young to remember Edward R. Murrow or those old enough to remember who would consider a talented and opinionated, well spoken baseball commentator and card collecter the peer of Edward R. Murrow, is a hollow and sardonic slap in the face to Murrow's legacy.

At this point in time Olbermann can't even carry water for numerous sportcasters in his field of expertise. Bob Costas, Curt Gowdy, Dizzy Dean, Mel Allen, Vin Scully, Harry Caray or maybe "Keith Olbermann is the next Howard Cosell?" In some ways familiar but really No way Jose.

Is Marvin Kitman is the next Howdy Doody? He's giving it his best shot, if you are familiar with his antics.
Now for those too young to remember don't worry about it and for those old enough to have watched Howdy Doody on TV, You get my point, don't you?

I think you're being a big hard on Olbermann in your comments. I agree that Murrow was the best newsman for his time, perhaps the greatest ever, and suggesting that Olbermann is a dedicated to his craft as Murrow was is a bit of a stretch. But I do believe that Keith Olbermann is close to becoming the Edward R. Murrow of our time. His "special comments" are as close to being "right on" as anything I've heard out of the American news media. I disagree with you that this piece is a "hollow and sardonic slap in the face to Murrow's legacy." Murrow's legacy stands on its own. Have you seen the movie "Goodnight and Good Luck?" I have a copy of it, if you'd like to borrow it.

Thanks for your comments.

I would be honored sir. You know where to find me, don't you?

I'm sorry, did I say "borrow?" I meant "rent." I'm sure we can work that out.

we can work that out.

Ok, just like the constipated mathematician, we can work it out with a pencil. I have a friend in possession of the rookie card of one Eddie Waitkus, the smooth-fielding first baseman for the Phillies in the 1940's. I will let you look at it in exchange for renting "Goodnight and Good Luck". Pencil me a note yay or nay, OK? I said look but don't touch.
Don't know Eddie? Check with your man Olbermann, I'm sure he will fill you in because this is the "one" subject he can regurgitate accuratley. Or ask Dick Ellis, he probably knows baseball history as well as KO.
